Delta Creative:
Floral Inspiration Box

by Tammie Wilson

Looking for new ways to use the products in your store? New Surfaces? New techniques? Then this is the project for you and those customers of yours who are yearning for something creatively different.

I fell in love with the new Alter Ego Surfaces from Prima Marketing when I saw them at the CHA Summer Show. My mind started swimming with ideas and different ways I could use these wonderful surfaces, so I combined them with a little paint and some trendy stamp images and created a project that is not only beautiful and functional but relatively quick and easy to do. Great as a gift filled with potpourri, candy or a special little trinket. Imagine, create, inspire and enjoy! For more inspirational ideas, visit www.DeltaCreative.com.

  • Scrap Couture: Prima Marketing Alter Ego™ Cutwork Box 200060*
  • Loew-Cornell: La Corneille Acrylic Handle Brush (3/4" Glaze/Wash Series 7550C)**
  • sandpaper (fine grit)
  • two sea wool sponges (3")
  • palette paper
  • palette knife
  • water basin
  • hair dryer (optional)
  • old toothbrush

INSTRUCTIONS:

(Note: Please take a moment to review the instructions on all product packaging before beginning any project.)

Step 1
Sand box and lid to smooth any rough edges or areas. Paint the entire box bottom and the insert with two smooth, even coats of Chambray Blue. Paint the outside and edges of the lid with two smooth, even coats of Opaque Blue. Do not paint the inside of the lid; this may cause it to fit too tightly, making the box difficult to open and close. Painting the inside of the box bottom is optional.

Step 2
On the palette paper, pour out a half-dollar-size puddle of each of the paints and mix each one with two parts Faux Finish Glaze Base Clear using the palette knife.

Step 3
Dampen the sea wool sponges, making sure to squeeze out all the excess moisture. Working one side of the box at a time with wet color into wet color, sponge the entire box bottom and insert using all the colors from the palette. This is the background and should remain very light and airy. If the color becomes too intense, use more Chambray Blue to soften. Let dry.

Step 4
Pour a fresh puddle of each of the following paint colors out on the palette—Laguna Blue, Opaque Blue, Lavender and Light Foliage Green. Double-load a Paint & Toss Sponge (one half with Laguna Blue and one half with Opaque Blue) and dab it on the palette to blend the colors slightly. Now pounce the color onto the Falling Flowers stamp, keeping the Laguna Blue toward the center, and stamp the side of the box (refer to photo). This technique does not require a lot of paint; it should sit on the top of the rubber just like ink. Acrylic paint does dry fast, so you need to work quickly. Practice on a piece of paper to get a feel for the technique and to learn how much paint to load onto the stamp. Continue stamping the image around the box and on the insert.

Step 5
Continue in the manner described in Step 4 above to complete the stamping on the box as follows—Daisy Pattern is done with Opaque Blue, Swirl is done with Opaque Blue or Light Foliage Green. Make sure to clean the stamp between colors.

Step 6
Fill in open areas with flowers from the stencil. Double-load the sponges with Opaque Blue and Lavender or Opaque Blue and Laguna Blue, keeping the lighter color to the center of the flower. Remember, stenciling requires very little paint, so don't overload the sponge with paint or it will seep under the edges of the stencil.

Step 7
Clean stamps with Stamp Cleaner and the old toothbrush to remove the paint.

Step 8
Finish the outside of the box with two to three coats of Exterior/Interior Satin Varnish. Enjoy!
